The seventh-most populated municipality in Colorado, Arvada, is known as a mountainside sanctuary for its residents. It was not officially incorporated until 1904 and has since flourished as a suburb of Denver, finally becoming a town in 1963. Now a burgeoning city of over 100,000, many residents commute to Denver or Boulder.
Arvada is rich with history, and here you will find the location of the first documented discovery of gold in the Rocky Mountain region in 1850. That find was a mere six grams, worth about five dollars at the time ($166.61 today). Years later, during the Pike’s Peak Gold Rush, that original prospector brought a second group back to the site. The small amounts of gold that were found were quickly mined and claimed. In contrast, large hard rock deposits were found in the nearby mountains to the west. Many miners eventually gave up their dreams of striking it rich quickly and decided to farm the mineral-laden land along the creeks. They found a healthy market for their crops, selling to those still searching for gold. The area remained largely the same until the second half of the 20th century when the surrounding area became a thriving center of growth and commerce. A few of the major companies located nearby are Lockheed Martin, St. Anthony Hospital, Terumo BCT, and MillerCoors. In 2019, Arvada was recognized by Apartment Therapy as one of the coolest suburbs in the country.
While the attractions within the town tend to lean towards educational experiences, they are still spectacular. The Arvada Center for the Arts & Humanities has become one of the State’s largest art venues. The Cussler Museum, created by renowned author Clive Cussler, is an extensive collection of over 100 pristinely preserved classic cars, built between 1906 and 1965. Those hoping to shop until they drop are in luck. The Historic Old Town District is a mix of historic buildings and over one hundred modern boutiques and dining experiences. Nearby Denver has something for everyone. Hiking the trails at Rocky Mountain National Park, admiring the beauty of the Denver Botanic Gardens, grabbing some peanuts and Cracker Jacks at Coors Field for a Rockies’ game, or just taking to the slopes is merely the beginning of what the city has to offer.
